 Environmental Commitment

Creating a Sustainable Environment Inside Nestlé
Purina and Caring for the Environment Outside.

Nestlé Purina is committed to sustainable development that helps ensure a better quality of life for everyone, including our pets, now and for generations to come.

We know that pet owners agree and care about doing more.

  • 90% say they care about the environment.
  • 60% say they want to know more about how they can help protect the environment.

Nestlé Purina is constantly striving to reduce the impact of its products and operations. Key initiatives around sustainability are embedded in the company's organizational strategies and annual business plans. We are accountable for meeting goals year to year and are committed to improving results over the long term.

What Have We Been Up To?

Pet Food Can Recycling

  • Background-Nestlé Purina produces more than 3 billion recyclable pet food cans a year
  • Launched a regional test in partnership with Recyclebank to provide consumers with strong incentives to recycle their pet food cans
  • Adding consistent recycling messaging on all can labels and variety packs in the coming year
  • Launching a national pet food can recycling awareness campaign in April 2010 in support of "Earth Month"

"Dura Weave" Polypropylene Tough Bags

  • Moved many of our larger dry pet food items into woven polypropylene packaging
  • Three times stronger than the old paper material
  • Reduces product damage by an average of 60%
  • Reduces material resources by nearly 50%, depending on package sizes

Yesterday's News
  • A paper-based cat litter, featuring moisture-locking pellets made out of 100% recycled materials
  • Recycled materials include newspaper, corrugated cardboard, magazines, phone books, and sawdust
  • On average, more than 20,000 tons of material is recycled into Yesterday's News each year

Nestlé Purina and Renewable Resources

  • Nestlé Purina's Denver plant's solar project makes it the first U.S. manufacturer to utilize renewable energy for the production of pet food.
  • While the Denver solar project is a small first step, the company is evaluating the feasibility of installing solar power capabilities at its Flagstaff, Arizona plant and its Maricopa, California plant in 2010.
  • About two-thirds of electric power purchased at Nestlé Purina's Dunkirk, NY plant comes from renewable resources.
  • Three Nestlé Purina plants in Iowa, Clinton, Ft. Dodge, and Davenport purchase over 10% of their electric power from renewable resources.

Nestlé Purina also participates in the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Partnership, which uses more efficient shipping methods to conserve fuel.

We were also named a finalist for the St. Louis Business Journal's "Heroes of the Planet" award in 2008.
